Yes, social marketing is communications marketing

I have been discussing this topic with various people who are active on social media platforms. And, interestingly, half of them answered 'no' to my question -- is social marketing is communications marketing?. They believed that communications is very much important in any form of media, and social media is no 'special' exception to this.

But I do believe that social marketing is all about communications marketing, and I am writing this post to support my thought on this topic.

I do agree that communications is critical to any media; however, the emergence of social media has taken importance of communications to the another level. Social media marketing starts with communications and ends with communications. I will mention some brief points below to support this statement.

1) The success of social media is depend only and only on how you communicate with you target audience. Every social platform has its own way of functioning and presenting, and we, as social marketer, have to improvise ourselves to garner success from these platforms by altering our way of communications.

2) Either a company blog or Twitter post, your communication has to be specific and precise. It should convey the right message to your audience in the simplest possible way it can. It may be harmful for you to make unnecessary statements and promises on these platforms that cannot be fulfilled. So, your communications have to be authentic and sincere.

3) When we compare social media in terms of communications with other media platforms, we're forgetting that social media is much more demanding than these traditional platforms. It has got more speed and power to influence your target audience than the traditional ones. The reach of social media is much more larger and deeper than the traditional platforms. We really do not have segmentation like B2B or B2C segments on the social media. It is open for everyone, and this increases your risk factor.

These are some small points that I think one should consider while communicating through social media. Remember, social media is an innovative invention, and not 'old wine in a new bottle'.

I am exploring this discussion more and more, and your views and comments are appreciated.

I will be back on this topic very soon.

Till then, stay connected!

Relevance and Influence: Balance is the Key

Relevance and influence are two important aspects of social media marketing. Which one of them is more important is very difficult question to answer. I would consider content as a magical lamp to solve social media challenges.  Marketers need to use content precisely to have a great mix of relevance and influence in their marketing strategy. This can be done by effective content syndication. Content syndication does not necessarily mean content repetition, it can be referred as sending consistent marketing message across all the platforms. The success of these two important elements is largely depend on the effective customer engagement, and again content comes in the picture.  Social media has provided marketers with ample sharing opportunities, however,  they need to be utilized properly. Sharing, for me, i...
