Five important tips on Twitter

I recently had a survey amongst my colleagues on their favorite micro blogging site. They had four options to choose from including Twitter, FriendFeed, Tumblr and Jaiku. Although I had predicted the survey result (obviously Twitter), I wanted to know what really excites users about Twitter.

No doubt, Twitter is much more popular and powerful micro blogging platform for users globally. And users, individual and organizations, are using Twitter to its maximum capacity for sharing individual updates, and products and services.

Today, I will share some useful tips on how to use Twitter.

1) Find relevant users to follow: Unlike other social platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn, finding relevant people and connecting with them becomes much more easier with Twitter. You really don't have to wait for your connection request to be get accepted by the other user. You can just find right people, and start following them instantly. This really makes information sharing easier, simpler, and most importantly, open. You can search for people or subject to find right people to follow on Twitter.

2) Join the conversation: I have seen organizations jumping into this 'social arena' with half knowledge. I am referring half knowledge as they have knowledge about their products and services; however, they do not know how to communicate it on the social platforms. This is like a 'one-way' traffic. And this is very dangerous. The best way to use Twitter is to listen and join existing conversations. This gives you an opportunity to know what people are saying about the industry, and how can he jump into this conversation. The basic idea is to become an integral part of that conversation and convey your message to the larger audience.

3) Tweet regularly: For any social media platform, it is very essential to maintain the consistency, and Twitter is not an exception to that. You have make your presence felt by tweeting regularly on your company, products, and services. You have to keep the momentum going to attract more followers to your profile. So, when you are there, be there!

4) Customized your profile presentation: Twitter allows you to customize your profile look. Either you can use any template from the existing ones, or you can create a new one to establish brand identity, highlighting your logo and company name. This gives you an additional advantage of building brand on this platform.

5) Add logo to your profile: Very important one to remember. If you are tweeting about your organization, make sure you have your company logo as your profile picture. Apart from the customized profile, this is an additional way to extend your brand loyalty on this platform.

These are some useful tips on Twitter. There's much more to come.

Till then, stay connected!
